How does Fairly Pay work?

Understanding how you get paid on Fairly

Fairly Pay covers payments made through the app: Fairly Payments and Fairly Payroll.

Every shift is either a Fairly Payroll shift or not, and that decides how you get paid:

  • Fairly Payroll shifts are always paid through Fairly Payroll. You are an employee of the hiring clinic for that shift. Taxes and deductions are handled automatically, and you receive a T4 at year end. These shifts are labelled in the app, so you'll know before you apply.
  • All other shifts are paid one of two ways, chosen by the clinic:
    • Fairly Payments. The clinic pays you through the app, and your payout is sent to your bank account automatically once your completed shift is approved. You are paid as an independent contractor.
    • Outside the app, by e-transfer, cheque, or another method. That payment is between you and the clinic, and Fairly Pay does not apply to it.
      • Fairly has no visibility into payments made outside the app, and cannot track, confirm, or recover them.

What you need to set up

Fairly Pay setup has two parts. You can do both at once, or come back for the second part later.

Bank Details

  • Your bank details are where your deposits go, for both Fairly Payments and Fairly Payroll.
  • You will need your institution number, transit number, and account number.
  • Your details are secured with Stripe's bank-grade encryption. They go straight to Stripe, which powers Fairly Payments.

Tax Information

  • Your SIN and date of birth are only needed for Fairly Payroll shifts, because you are an employee of the hiring clinic on those shifts.
  • Your SIN is encrypted and used only for payroll tax purposes.
  • This part is optional. You can add it anytime from Settings. You cannot apply for Fairly Payroll shifts until you do.

Verifying your identity

After you add your bank details for the first time, Stripe needs to verify your identity before it can send you money. This takes about 2 minutes:

  • Confirm your details match your ID.
  • Take a photo of a government-issued photo ID, like a driver's licence or passport.
  • Take a selfie. Stripe matches it to your ID to confirm it's really you.

Tip: when you add your bank details, Stripe is required to verify your identity before it can send money to your account. If you add your bank details when you first join Fairly, you only verify your identity once. If you skip setup and add them later, you will verify twice, once to access Fairly and again when you add your bank details.

What happens if you skip setup

You can skip Fairly Pay setup and still use Fairly, but:

  • Fairly Payments payouts are held. If a clinic pays you through Fairly Payments, your money is held securely until you add your bank details and verify your identity. Nothing is lost, it just waits for you.
  • Fairly Payroll shifts are unavailable. You cannot apply for them until you complete Fairly Pay setup, including your SIN and date of birth.
  • Shifts paid outside the app are not affected.

Updating your details

You can update your bank details or tax information anytime. Go to Settings and tap Manage Fairly Pay Details. Changes apply to payouts that have not yet been processed.

Important Tax Disclaimer

Fairly Staffing facilitates connections between clinics and temporary professionals; we do not hire, employ, or contract temps ourselves.

If you work a Fairly Payroll shift, you are treated as an employee of the hiring clinic for that shift. Applicable payroll taxes and statutory deductions are handled automatically. You will receive a T4 at year end, and a Record of Employment (ROE) will be issued 30 days after your shift ends. Learn more here: How does Fairly Payroll work (temp)?

If you are paid through Fairly Payments or directly by a clinic outside of Fairly Payroll, you are fully and solely responsible for tracking, reporting, and remitting any applicable taxes. Fairly Staffing does not determine your employment status (employee or contractor) in these cases, and does not withhold or remit taxes on your behalf. The nature of your working relationship is strictly between you and the clinic.

If you are paid as an independent contractor, whether through Fairly Payments or directly by a clinic, you are responsible for ensuring your own tax compliance. Fairly Staffing does not issue tax slips, does not provide tax advice, and assumes no responsibility or liability for tax consequences, reporting errors, or non-compliance.

You are expected to maintain accurate records for tax purposes. Your full earnings history is available in the app, and we strongly recommend consulting a qualified tax professional to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, provincial, and local tax laws.
